Major Rehabilitation on Lekki–Epe Expressway Commences Soon.

The Lagos State Government has announced that major rehabilitation works on a 20-kilometre stretch of the Lekki–Epe Expressway will commence on Sunday and last for about 64 days, as part of efforts to improve road safety and durability along the busy corridor.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed this on Tuesday during an inspection tour of the expressway, stating that traffic management during the construction period would be carried out in phases across key intersections rather than shutting down the entire route at once.

According to Osiyemi, the first phase of the project, tagged Intersection One, will cover the stretch from Chevron to Igbo-Efon, with rehabilitation works to be carried out on the Lagos-bound carriageway using a structured eight-intersection phased approach.

“To facilitate construction while maintaining vehicular movement, the Lagos-bound carriageway will be closed in segments,” the commissioner said.

He explained that traffic would be diverted to the Epe-bound carriageway through a dynamic lane-sharing system, especially during the morning peak hours from 4:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Under this arrangement, Osiyemi said two lanes would be made available to motorists on the Lagos-bound side, while one lane would be accessible on the Epe-bound carriageway.

He added that road shoulders on the Epe-bound side were currently being graded to create additional space for traffic diversions during the rehabilitation works.

To ease congestion, the commissioner advised motorists to consider alternative routes, including linking the Coastal Road from Ogombo via Abraham Adesanya, in order to avoid the Lekki–Epe Expressway during the construction period.

“Also available to motorists is a strategic alternative route that will link the Coastal Road from Eleganza via Orchid through Lafiaji and Naale Street,” he said.

Osiyemi assured road users that adequate traffic management personnel, clear directional signage, proper illumination and necessary road safety measures would be deployed throughout the duration of the project to minimise inconvenience to commuters.

He further revealed that the state government was engaging key stakeholders, including the Lekki-Epe Residents Association, to boost public awareness and ensure cooperation throughout the rehabilitation period.

In a related development, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Mr Sola Giwa, said relevant government officials had carried out a joint inspection of the corridor ahead of the commencement of work.

“Ahead of the scheduled rehabilitation of the Lekki–Epe Expressway, the Commissioner for Transportation, the Special Adviser on Infrastructure, and I, alongside our teams from the Ministry of Transportation and the Office of Infrastructure, conducted a joint inspection tour of the corridor in preparation for works commencing on Sunday,” Giwa said in a social media post.

He noted that the rehabilitation would be executed in phases across key intersections, with clearly defined traffic diversions, counterflow arrangements during peak hours, as well as day and night work schedules.

According to him, the deployment of adequate traffic management personnel and signage would ensure safety and ease of movement for road users.

“This proactive engagement reinforces our commitment to minimising disruption while delivering a safer, more durable road for all road users,” Giwa added.

The Lagos State Government appealed to residents and commuters along the Lekki–Epe axis to exercise patience and cooperate with traffic officials, describing the project as a critical intervention aimed at enhancing long-term road safety and commuting experience.
