Fubara Denies Blocking Wike-Led Pro-Tinubu Rally, Says Stadium Under Construction.

The Rivers State Government has dismissed claims that it deliberately blocked a pro-President Bola Tinubu rally allegedly spearheaded by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, insisting that the decision was purely based on safety concerns surrounding the proposed venue.

The government explained that the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt, earmarked for the rally, is currently undergoing reconstruction and is therefore unsafe for any form of mass gathering.

In a statement issued by the state government, officials maintained that no political group was singled out or targeted, stressing that public safety considerations informed the refusal to grant access to the facility. According to the government, ongoing construction work at the stadium poses serious risks to lives and property, making its use for rallies or other large-scale events inappropriate at this time.

The clarification followed reports that a Wike-led political group loyal to President Bola Tinubu was prevented from holding a pro-Tinubu rally at the stadium, triggering accusations of political suppression against the Rivers State administration.

State officials, however, rejected the allegation, describing it as misleading and politically motivated. They noted that the restriction applies to all organisations and individuals, regardless of political affiliation, until reconstruction work at the stadium is completed and certified safe for public use.

“The Yakubu Gowon Stadium is an active construction site. Allowing any rally there at this time would amount to endangering lives. This decision has nothing to do with politics,” the government said.

The development comes amid rising political tension in Rivers State, with the rift between the current state administration and the camp of former governor Wike continuing to shape the state’s political atmosphere.

While supporters of the rally insist that alternative venues were not adequately considered, the government reiterated its commitment to upholding public safety and maintaining order, warning against attempts to politicise routine administrative decisions.

As the controversy unfolds, the Rivers State Government says it remains open to lawful political activities — provided they comply with safety regulations and existing laws.
