Oba of Lagos Caps New White Cap Chiefs

There was jubilation and cultural fanfare in Isale Eko on Friday as Lagos witnessed the formal capping of new White Cap Chiefs, a historic ceremony that reinforced the city’s rich traditional heritage.

The ceremony, held in the ancient heart of Lagos, was presided over by His Royal Majesty, Rilwan Babatunde Osuolale Aremu Akiolu I, who led the age-long traditional rites marking the elevation of distinguished indigenes into the revered White Cap Chieftaincy institution.

The colourful event attracted traditional chiefs, royal families, community leaders, cultural enthusiasts and residents of Isale Eko, who turned out in large numbers to celebrate the momentous occasion.

Those formally capped as White Cap Chiefs include:

Engr. Ajibade Ismail Nosiru Ayeni, installed as the Eletu Odibo of Lagos, and Head of the Akarigbere Royal Class.

Arc. Gbolahan Owodunni Oki, installed as the Ogboni Iduntafa of Lagos, also of the Akarigbere Royal Class.

Chief Adebola Olalekan Dosunmu, installed as the Olorogun Adodo of Lagos, from the Akarigbere Royal Class.

Chief Lookman Bolaji Oluwa, installed as the Onisemo of Lagos, representing the Ogalade Class of Chiefs.

The White Cap Chiefs institution remains one of the most respected traditional hierarchies in Lagos, with members serving as key custodians of customs, culture and governance in the ancient kingdom.

Speaking through the rites, the Oba of Lagos charged the newly installed chiefs to uphold the traditions of Lagos, serve their communities with integrity, and remain committed to the preservation of Yoruba cultural values.

The event was marked by traditional music, chants, prayers and displays of cultural splendour, as residents described the occasion as a proud moment for Isale Eko and Lagos at large.
