Oyo Police Intercept Truck Carrying Suspected Explosive Materials in Saki
The Oyo State Police Command has intercepted a truck loaded with materials suspected to be explosive devices during a stop-and-search operation in Saki. The operation, conducted on Saturday, was intelligence-led and described as an “operational success” by authorities.
In a statement released on Sunday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, the police confirmed that the truck and its contents have been secured and are currently in police custody.
“The truck and the suspected materials have been secured and are currently held by the police,” Olayinka stated.
Following a briefing on the incident, the Commissioner of Police, CP Femi Haruna, immediately ordered a “thorough investigation.” Specialized teams, including the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit and the Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Unit, have been deployed to manage and examine the items safely.
“A comprehensive forensic analysis has already started, along with an extensive investigation to identify the exact nature of the items and their intended use,” the statement added.
The driver of the truck has been arrested and is reportedly cooperating fully with investigators as they work to unravel the circumstances of the incident.
The Police Command used the statement to acknowledge the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, for his “consistent support, strategic leadership, and ongoing operational guidance.”
Reassuring the public, the Command emphasized the Nigeria Police Force’s dedication to protecting lives and property, urging citizens to “remain calm, as there is no need for panic.” They pledged to provide updates as the investigation unfolds.
This incident follows a similar security operation in Kano State, where police recently intercepted suspected explosive materials and illegal drugs in separate operations within the metropolitan area.
