Afenifere Proposes South-West Rail Line to Boost Security, Connectivity.

The pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has proposed the construction of a regional rail line linking the capitals of South-West states as part of measures to enhance security, economic integration and connectivity across the zone.

The group said an efficient rail network would ease movement of people and goods, promote regional trade and reduce security risks associated with road travel, especially amid rising cases of banditry, kidnapping and armed robbery on major highways in the region.

Afenifere also urged governors of the South-West states to take stronger steps to empower the regional security outfit, Amotekun, stressing that improved funding, logistics and operational autonomy are necessary for the outfit to effectively tackle insecurity at the grassroots level.

The resolutions were reached during Afenifere’s caucus and general meetings held on Monday and Tuesday at the residence of its leader, Chief Reuben Fasoranti, in Akure, Ondo State.

At the meetings, the organisation emphasised the need for closer collaboration among South-West states on security, infrastructure and development initiatives, noting that regional cooperation remains critical to safeguarding lives, property and economic activities.

Afenifere reaffirmed its commitment to advocating policies and projects that promote peace, stability and sustainable development in the South-West, while calling on elected leaders in the zone to prioritise collective regional interests over partisan considerations.
