All the 36 Governors in the Country Cannot Belong to a Single Political Party –Sule
Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule has said that defections of state governors to the All Progressives Congress (APC) reflect the positive impact of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reforms ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He explained that the opposition appears unsettled as more governors align themselves with the ruling party, largely because of the measures implemented by the Tinubu administration.
The governor made this remark during an interview on a national television political programme in Lafia, the state capital.
Governor Sule rejected claims by opposition figures that the defection of governors does not guarantee electoral success for the APC.
He argued that state governors play a central role in development and have considerable influence over the political direction of their states.
According to Sule, the support of governors can help shape voter preferences and strengthen the party’s presence at the state level, which ultimately contributes to broader electoral performance.
The governor recalled the political realignments of 2014, when several governors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) joined the APC.
He noted that this move played a key role in the election of former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015.
Sule suggested that the current wave of defections follows a similar pattern, signaling growing confidence and strength for the APC as the nation moves closer to the 2027 elections.
He emphasized that political trends from past elections often indicate how current dynamics can influence outcomes.
Addressing concerns about Nigeria potentially becoming a one-party state, Sule clarified that it is unrealistic for all 36 state governors to belong to a single political party.
He said that while the APC has welcomed 29 governors so far, including the recent addition from Plateau State, it is unlikely that every governor would join the party.
He maintained that the defections are a reflection of individual decisions and political alignment, rather than a move toward eliminating opposition parties.
He said, “As of Wednesday, we welcomed the 29th governor that of Plateau State to our meeting. These are governors who are selling the party, themselves and Mr. President.
“There is no way all the 36 governors in the country would belong to a single political party. Even if that happens, Nigeria will never be a one party state. We are 29 and counting. Most likely some few governors will join us.”
