Super Eagles cruise into 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Semi-Finals with 2-0 Win Over Algeria… Tinubu hails victory
The Super Eagles of Nigeria advanced to the semifinals of AFCON after defeating Algeria 2-0 in the quarterfinals match held at the Stade de Marrakech in Morocco.
Second-half goals from Victor Osimhen in the 47th minutes and Akor Adams, ten minutes later proved decisive, as the Super Eagles outclassed their North African opponents.
President Tinubu has sent congratulatory message to the team on their victory over Algeria, stating that their performance was inspiring and pledging the support of Nigerians.
Algeria tried to fight back, but Nigeria’s well-organised defence held firm. Their lack of attacking threat was evident, as they failed to record a single shot on target throughout the match.
Nigeria did suffer a setback when Wilfred Ndidi was forced off with an injury in the second half, but the changes made by coach Eric Chelle did not disrupt the team’s momentum. Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali had little to do as the Super Eagles managed the closing stages comfortably, including six minutes of added time.
The match statistics underlined Nigeria’s dominance, with 13 shots to Algeria’s three, close to 60 per cent possession and five clear-cut chances created.
The win marks a significant milestone for Nigeria, who are now set to face Morocco in the semifinals on January 14.
