A Coalition in Motion: Obasanjo Reportedly broker Obi, Kwankwaso Secret Alliance For 2027 Race

Nigeria’s 2027 presidential contest may have been dramatically reshaped behind closed doors. A proposed joint ticket involving Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso has reportedly reached an advanced stage, with former President Olusegun Obasanjo quietly emerging as the key power broker driving the alliance.

Multiple political sources say the unexpected convergence has unsettled existing ambitions within the opposition and triggered intense manoeuvring ahead of the next general election.

It has been reported that the development has already altered calculations within the African Democratic Congress and beyond.

Findings indicate that the idea of a joint Obi–Kwankwaso ticket was initiated by Olusegun Obasanjo, who reportedly urged both men to work together under the banner of the African Democratic Congress.

Party insiders disclosed that Obasanjo not only encouraged Peter Obi to defect to the ADC but also asked him to collaborate with Rabiu Kwankwaso to secure the presidential and vice-presidential slots of the party.

The former president had openly supported Obi during the 2023 election and mobilised nationwide backing for him against President Bola Tinubu, reinforcing perceptions that his influence remains potent in opposition politics.

Sources confirmed that Obi and Kwankwaso have jointly constituted a committee tasked with strategising and mobilising support within the ADC for the proposed ticket.

A senior figure in Obi’s camp revealed that the committee was established about a month ago, signalling that discussions have moved beyond exploratory talks.

“We are no longer at the talking stage. A committee has been set up and things are taking shape,” the source said.

Confirming the development, Magaji Ibrahim, SAN and a leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, said the alliance had reached an advanced stage and that Kwankwaso was prepared to serve either as president or vice president.

Although Kwankwaso has yet to formally join the ADC, party insiders say discussions around his defection are ongoing. Leaders of the Kwankwasiyya Movement confirmed that talks with ADC leadership are active, though no final agreement has been reached.

Ibrahim made it clear that anything short of the vice-presidential position would be unacceptable, underscoring the delicate negotiations surrounding the alliance.

Despite growing reports, the ADC officially distanced itself from claims of a concluded alliance. The party’s spokesperson, Bolaji Abdullahi, said while both Obi and Kwankwaso are valuable political assets, any discussions between them remain outside the party’s formal structures.

He added that the ADC remains open to welcoming Kwankwaso, describing him as a strong political leader whose entry would strengthen the coalition.

The camp of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar however, dismissed suggestions that the emerging alliance poses a threat to his ambition.

According to his spokesperson, Paul Ibe, Atiku remains focused on his political journey and views the entrance of more aspirants as healthy for the party rather than destabilising.

Meanwhile, the Obidient Movement welcomed the alliance, describing it as a potentially formidable force if properly harnessed. Its coordinator, Yinusa Tanko, said cooperation between the Obidient and Kwankwasiyya movements could redefine opposition strength in 2027.

However, tension has surfaced within the ADC over zoning. Obi’s supporters are pushing for the presidential ticket to be zoned to the South, arguing it offers the clearest path to defeating President Bola Tinubu. Party leaders, however, warned that zoning could fracture the coalition and weaken its national appeal.

With Obasanjo reportedly linking Obi to northern power brokers and multiple factions adjusting their strategies, analysts say the proposed alliance could fundamentally alter Nigeria’s political landscape.
