The Ogun State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has issued a 14-days ultimatum to Governor Dapo Abiodun to fully implement local government autonomy in the state or risk an indefinite strike.

The union said the ultimatum followed what it described as continued interference by the state government in the affairs of local councils, despite constitutional provisions guaranteeing their financial and administrative independence.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, NULGE accused the state government of undermining local governments through poor funding and control of council finances, a situation it said has crippled service delivery at the grassroots.

The union warned that failure to address the issues within the 14-day window would leave its members with no option but to embark on an indefinite industrial action across the state’s local government councils.

NULGE called on the Ogun State Government to comply with existing court judgments and constitutional directives on local government autonomy, stressing that councils must be allowed to manage their funds and affairs without undue state interference.

It added that the planned strike, if triggered, would affect operations at all local government secretariats in Ogun State.
